E9. Research an important person or event in NZ’s history. Present your findings. Captain James Cook

As captain on three voyages of discovery in the late eighteenth century, James Cook became the first European to define the outline of New Zealand. Thanks to Cook’s detailed charts, and his gentlemen passengers’ scientific and artistic documentation, accurate knowledge of New Zealand was available in Europe for the first time from the 1770s.

James cook is not a New Zealander he is an Englishman but he did discover New Zealand he is our founder. James Cook was born in 1728 at Marton-in-Cleveland, Yorkshire, England. In 1746 he moved to the port of Whitby, where he was apprenticed to a shipowner and coal shipper. As a sailor in the North Sea coal trade the young Cook familiarised himself with the type of vessel which, years later, he would employ on his epic voyages of discovery.

And instead of finding a great land mass to balance those of the northern hemisphere, Cook initiated the first Māori-European interaction since Abel Tasman’s brief encounter in 1642. In his remarkably accurate charting of New Zealand and his dealings with Māori, Cook displayed his excellence as a navigator and his essential humanity.

As you can see James cook is a very big part of New Zealand history, It he didn’t find New Zealand then we may not be here today.

The 3 high schools that I visited were. Riccarton, Lincoln and Girls high. They are some of the best schools iv ever been to. Riccarton has the best musical side iv ever seen I would love to go to Riccarton high school. Lincoln is a great school it is big but really cool I might get lost but ill figure it out soon enough. And Girls is really good and the bonus is there are no boys and it is small so I won't get lost hopefully.

Term 2 Novel Study

This term I have been reading and studying the novel Silverstream

I found this novel (interesting, okay, etc) okay because it seamed cool on the back but then I read on and in the end the book was okay.

During the novel I had to complete a thinking map which shows that I can classify how the author has shown the theme of the book.

National Standard this covers

  • Year 7/8  Standard
    • I can identify and evaluate the way writers’ use language and ideas to suit their purpose and I can use my growing wide range of academic and content-specific vocabulary to understand texts.

Overall I would give this novel a rating of  6/10 and I would / would not recommend it to others to read because if you are someone who likes Mystery's then it is a good book but if you don't then I don't recommend it. because if you like this stuff then read it but if you don't then don't read it.

Drama 2017

In ARTS this term we have been learning to: Do silent productions
Select and use techniques and relevant technologies to develop drama practice.
Here is a link to our online modelling book.

  • During this unit of learning we:
  • Described the characteristics of silent performances.
  • Identified different techniques used in silent performances.
  • Used these techniques in a variety of different practice situations.
  • Worked in a small group to put together our own silent performance.

The most challenging part of this unit of learning was having to add all of the things we had to add because it was hard to fit all of them in the act.

The two things that I enjoyed the most were:
  1. putting the performance tougher
  2. Working as a group and adding the mime

The story that my group told silently was I am playing with a ball and then Tash takes it and then Tash and Savannah start playing with it and then the chase begins and in the end we all play tougher.

Overall I think my group worked Really well together because we got everything done and we are ready to preform.

Current Events Term 2, 2017

Current Events Term 2, 2017

WALT: I can successfully research a current event.
Here is a link to our online modelling book for this unit of learning.

The National Standard that I have been aiming for during this unit of learning is:
(delete the standard that DO NOT APPLY to you)

  • Year7/8: I can use appropriate skills and technologies to find and use a range of texts for specific purposes.

Each week we have read a short text about a current event/ topic. We then formed questions based on what we had read.  After this we researched the answers to our questions and finally we gave our opinions on what we had found out.

Here is some evidence of my learning.

Describe Map One: Where does NZ tax money go?
Describe map Two
HIllary Step Collapses.

My Next Step is to continue to  apply the reading and  research skills that I have learned in a variety of other areas.
